Calligraphy Workshop – Beginners

Back by popular demand – this bespoke calligraphy workshop with calligrapher and brush lettering artist Joyce Lee*. Learn the beautiful skill of writing with nib and ink in the inspirational surroundings of Elizabeth Gaskell’s House. A wonderful opportunity to acquire this exquisite skill and enjoy a meditative afternoon of practice in the splendidly-restored home of one of Manchester’s most famous writers.

In the beginner’s workshop you will be introduced to the elegant art of calligraphy, and with Joyce’s expert tuition you’ll learn modern calligraphy techniques during the four-hour workshop. You’ll use the House as inspiration for contemplative work – from the beautiful garden to the book-lined Study, and the graceful Drawing Room to the Dining Room where Elizabeth Gaskell herself sat with quill pen and ink to pen her famous novels and letters.

The workshop will be kept intentionally small in order to offer optimal attention to each participant.

You’ll receive a specially-curated calligraphy starter kit to keep, including nibs, nib holder, ink, letter writing supplies and notes. You’ll also enjoy cake and Elizabeth Gaskell’s House-blend tea or filter coffee in our Tea Room, as part of the workshop.

The price of the workshop is £70, which includes four hours of expert tuition, all materials, a calligraphy kit (see above) and tea/coffee and cake.
