Christmas at Elizabeth Gaskell’s House

Our Victorian Christmas Experience is back and even more magical than last year!

Starting from 15 November and running until 20 December the House will be decked out in Christmas splendour. 

Expect sparkling trees, unusual seasonal book-ish decor and atmospheric rooms that tell stories of Victorian Christmases past.  

Entertainment 

Catch The Venti Choir performing traditional carols and new compositions throughout the festive period. Check back here for performance times.  

Don’t forget to stop by the Servants’ Hall where you can make your own tiny book ornaments to hang on your Christmas tree at home. 

Families 

We have a new festive family trail and lots of opportunities for dressing-up and free-play all along the way. Appropriate for all ages.  

Christmas treats 

Escape the Christmas crowds and enjoy a delicious range of festive snacks and treats in our famous Tea Room. Try our seasonal hot chocolate or specialty teas and coffee served in vintage china. 

And don’t forget our Gift Shop – stocked with literary gifts for the book lovers in your life!  

All included in standard admission, children aged 12 and under are free with a paying adult. Select an admission date and time between 15 November to 20 December via our booking platform. 

What else do I need to know?

• You must pre-book your visit.
• Buggies, prams and wheelchair users are welcome throughout the House and garden (we have a lift and ramped entrance), there are baby-change facilities and the House is breastfeeding-friendly. We also have a ‘do touch’ policy so the majority of items in the House can be touched and chairs sat on.
• Last entry to the House is 3pm.

We are approximately a 10-15 minute walk from Manchester Museum and the Whitworth Art Gallery on Oxford Road.

The House is open every Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday 11am-4.30pm (last entry 3pm).
