Tea Room

“How nice to come away full of cake
and with a bag of books!”

Visitor to Elizabeth Gaskell’s House, May 2021

Our volunteer run Tea Room is situated within the houses light and spacious basement in what was originally Elizabeth Gaskell’s Kitchen.

Offering a wide range of hot and cold beverages, along with a selection of delicious cakes and biscuits, all served with traditional vintage china, the Tea Room is the perfect ending to a tour of the house.

With bookshelves lined with a variety of new and pre-loved books, the Tea Room also has a homely feel to it, creating the perfect space to meet family and friends or simply sit back and get lost in a book.

The Tea Room welcomes visitors every Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday from 11am till 4pm, so please pop in and say hello.

Payment by cash or card is accepted.

Second-hand Book Sale

We also run a very popular second-hand book sale every second Sunday of the month where we bring out additional stock that fills two rooms. As well as literature we also have an excellent selection of non-fiction books such as Art and Architecture, Walking and Topography, History, Craft, Gardening and DIY book, plus a large number of OS Maps to purchase. Entry to the second-hand book sale is included in your entrance fee.

All proceeds raised in the sale of second-hand book goes towards the running of Elizabeth Gaskell’s House. Donations of good quality books are very welcome but please do call in advance to let us know you are coming. We are particularly in need of classics and contemporary fiction in good condition.

Visitor Comment

We've got a house...it certainly is a beauty...I must try and make the house give as much pleasure to others as I can.’
