Elizabeth Gaskell's House through trees

What's On

Bricks & Paper: A Story in Light

The world of Victorian writer Elizabeth Gaskell is about to be lit up.

As Manchester celebrates the tenth anniversary of its designation as a UNESCO City of Literature, Elizabeth Gaskell’s House will become the canvas for a spectacular new immersive art projection experience.

Bricks & Paper: A Story in Light will first tell Elizabeth’s own remarkable story across the facade of her home, where she wrote some of her most famous novels including North and South.

Visitors will be drawn into moments of magical delight as manuscripts awaken, illustrations spring to life and scenes inspired by Elizabeth’s words unfold around them. This ambitious project will place Elizabeth Gaskell’s House in the spotlight, reimagining one of Manchester’s most important literary landmarks through light, art and imagery.

The exterior of the Grade II* listed house will be illuminated on the evenings of Friday 12 and Saturday 13 March 2027.

Bricks & Paper: A Story in Light is supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, with the concept created and produced by imitating the dog and in partnership with Manchester City of Literature.
