Project Assistant

Elizabeth Gaskell’s House is looking for a part time Project Assistant to join the team on a fixed term contract. This new role will provide project management and operational support for a two-year National Lottery Heritage Funded project at Elizabeth Gaskell’s House, and support delivery of digital aspects of the project.

The project itself will encompass business planning, infrastructure upgrades such as a new website and EPOS system, as well as a dedicated year of activities and events during 2027.

Elizabeth Gaskell’s House is a Grade II* listed building and is a small museum/historic House just a short distance from Oxford Road in Manchester. The House welcomes 5400 people through the doors every year via a variety of activities and events. This role will join a team of 6 staff plus around 40+ volunteers and trustees.

Location: The role is based at Elizabeth Gaskell’s House (EGH), 84 Plymouth Grove, Manchester, M13 9LW.
Hours: 2 days per week (15 hours). Core Days Wednesday; and either Tuesday or Friday. The post holder would also be required to work weekends and evenings on an ad hoc basis as needed. Time for this would be taken off in-lieu and is included within the 15 hours. Additional paid overtime may also be offered.

Salary – £10,000pa (FTE, £25,000)

Purpose of Job: To provide administrative and operational support for Elizabeth Gaskell’s House relating to The National Lottery Heritage Funded project – Writing the Future.

Main Duties

  • Responsible for providing day-to-day project management and operational support relating to The National Lottery Heritage Funded project – Writing the Future – at Elizbeth Gaskell’s House.
  • Dealing with admin and practicalities relating to the project – including organising meetings, contacting, meeting and following up on actions with external partners and suppliers, supporting events and meetings.
  • Collection and analysis of feedback, reviews and demographic data from visitors through online surveys.
  • Supporting the project director with project reporting, planning and risk management to ensure successful delivery of the project.
  • Managing the delivery of a new website for EGH including data migration and content creation and maintenance.
  • Supporting and delivering the implementation of a new EPOS system for retail and Tea Room sales
  • Accurate data management in an appropriate and legally compliant manner.
  • Operational support and Duty management at Elizabeth Gaskell’s House on open days when other staff are on leave or out of the building.
  • Duty management to include cash handling, key holder responsibilities and briefing & managing a team of volunteers.
  • Updating and maintaining the EGH website and other online platforms to help support the promotion of project activity.
  • Supporting the delivery of the EGH Social Media Strategy in relation to activity delivered as part of the project.
  • Collective responsibility for the security of the House and its collection
  • Key holder responsibilities.
  • Supporting the House Director and staff team with ad hoc administrative and operational tasks.
  • Willing to work additional paid hours when needed.

Skills


Essential

  • Excellent organisational skills, including coordinating multiple workstreams and tracking milestones, actions and risks.
  • Ability to communicate with people of differing ages, backgrounds and experience.
  • Able to work confidently on your own initiative as well as supporting other members of the team.
  • Strong communication skills on the phone, in-person and written (you must be happy picking-up and talking on the phone)
  • Strong time management skills along with the ability to think and plan ahead. Able to deal with multiple enquiries and projects simultaneously
  • Problem solving – thinking and responding quickly to deal with enquiries, problems and challenges as and when they happen.
  • Computer and data literate
  • Ability and willingness to be hands-on as needed. This could include setting up a room for a meeting, changing the batteries on a piece of equipment, welcoming a visitor or physically setting up and clearing down after an event at the House.
  • Happy to take on roles of responsibility that are shared among staff, including being a key holder with responsibility of opening and locking up the building and working alone when required.

Desirable

  • Paid or volunteer experience working within a cultural venue, museum or heritage site.
  • Experience of digital marketing and the WordPress website platform.
