Online Talk: Christmas Customs

Bringing some festive cheer from Elizabeth Gaskell’s House to your home! Sit back with a mince pie and enjoy Anthony Burton’s talk about seasonal customs from Christmas past. The Victorians rediscovered many traditional customs from wassail bowls and yule logs to mummers and boar’s heads. Anthony Burton explores this ‘re-invention of Christmas’ and considers to what extent the Gaskells were caught up in it.

The talks have been a highlight of my year and I would like to thank Elizabeth Gaskell’s house for providing such an excellent programme of events during such challenging times.” Visitor to online events
