Father’s Day Walk & Talk: Meet The Neighbours

Get to know the neighbours this Father’s Day!

Join us for a walk and talk around the Gaskells’ neighbourhood for Father’s Day.

The Gaskells were known for their wide circle of friends. Come and meet a few of the local ones, as we introduce you to the friends across the road and around the corner from their Manchester home.

Take a Sunday afternoon stroll with us to the University and back, as guides Anthony Burton and Dr Diane Duffy, armed with maps and pictures, help you to re-imagine the area as it would have been in the Gaskells’ time.

Enjoy a break for cake and tea in our delightful Tea Room, and then pull up a seat in the Servants’ Hall for an introduction to some of the Gaskells’ fabulous friends: Charles Hallé, Geraldine Jewsbury, the Winkworths, Shuttleworths, Shadwells, Schunks and many more…

To join in the walk, meet us at Elizabeth Gaskell’s House for a 1pm start. The walk will entail a gentle 45-minute stroll, ending back at the House.

To join us for the talk on the family’s friends and neighbours, meet us in the Servants’ Hall from 2-3pm.

You’re welcome to join in either or both parts of the afternoon, and there’ll be plenty of time in between to indulge in freshly-brewed coffee or tea and delicious cake!

Happy Father’s Day!

Event is free with House entry (£5 /£4 for an annual ticket)

We've got a house...it certainly is a beauty...I must try and make the house give as much pleasure to others as I can.’

Elizabeth Gaskell, in a letter to her friend Eliza Fox in 1850.
