Gardening Activity Day at Elizabeth Gaskell’s House

Join us for our first ever Gardening Activity Day!

Find out what it’s like to work in our award-winning garden by helping our team of Gardening Volunteer prepare the Garden for the autumn. At the end of the day, you will be able to take home a plant from our Garden.

Where: Elizabeth Gaskell’s House Garden
When: Wednesday 18th September
Time: 10.30am – 2.30pm

What will I be doing?

Tasks will be dependent on the weather, but will likely include:

  • Leaf collecting
  • Compost turning
  • Seed collecting
  • Lawn edging
  • Deadheading
  • General tidying, including of pots

You’ll also be able to meet our Gardening Volunteers, and it’s a great opportunity to learn more about how we have recreated Elizabeth’s garden.

F.A.Q.

Do I need any previous experience?

No – whether you’re a keen gardener or just want to try something new, we don’t mind. Training will be provided on the day.


What should I wear?

We recommend wearing outdoor clothes and sensible shoes. It would be advisable to bring some sort of waterproof coat with you. Gardening gloves would be handy, but are not essential.


Will I get a lunchbreak?

Yes. There will be a break for lunch as well, so please bring a packed lunch with you. Other refreshments of tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided.

Is there an age restriction?

Yes – the activity day is for over 18s only.
