Online Booking FAQ

Why do I need to pre-book to visit Elizabeth Gaskell’s House?

  1. We ask visitors to pre-book online so that we can ensure we have volunteers where we need them (and they can have breaks). Most, if not all, of the people you meet at Elizabeth Gaskell’s House will be volunteers and they cover all areas of the museum including nearly all the rooms, the ticket desk and Tea Room.
  2. Pre-booking speeds up the entry process to Elizabeth Gaskell’s House and avoids large groups of people arriving at once (some of our rooms are quite small).
  3. On some occasions, if we don’t have enough volunteers we have to run guided tours of Elizabeth Gaskell’s House so by pre-booking we can ensure people are grouped together.
  4. If we know how many people are visiting we can better predict how much cake to get out so we can avoid waste.
  5. Online booking reduces staff admin time overall which for a small museum with less than 3 full time staff members is really helpful and saves time and money.

How far in advance can I book my tickets to Elizabeth Gaskell’s House?

Why is Elizabeth Gaskell’s House only open on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays?

We are a small independent museum with a very small staff team and we haven’t got the capacity or volunteers available to open every day to the public. However, we do offer private tours for on other days which can be pre-booked. See this website page for details
