Online Event: North and South FanFiction- A Writing Passion

Celebrate the much-loved romantic story of John Thornton and Margaret Hale as they navigate their feelings for each other in the gritty industrial world of Milton (Manchester). The classic novel and BBC TV Series North and South, starring Richard Armitage and Daniela Denby-Ashe, was unusual for a period drama in showing working class city life. Its groundbreaking story and setting have inspired many retellings. Now a new generation of writers have created their own stories based on our favourite characters and storylines. What might have happened to Margaret and John after they married? What was their wedding night like? And what shaped these characters before they even met each other?

Join journalist Caroline Malcolm Boulton as she interviews top fanfiction writers Trudy Brasure, Elaine Owen and Philipa Holt to look at how they have been inspired by North and South to take up the pen in the name of Gaskell.

So, whether you are fan of the story, a fanfiction reader or writer, new to the genre, or an experienced author, join us for a celebration of fanfic and North and South.

‘Caroline was truly wonderful, she is a hoot and a half. She asked a lot of thoughtful questions that I had never considered before and added her own insights that shows she really understands the novel and the screenplay intimately.’ Visitor to previous event
