Frequently Asked Questions
Elizabeth Gaskell’s House run an active online events programme of talks, tours and workshops and we look forward to welcoming you to the House either in person or online soon. In the meantime, here are some answers to our Frequently Asked Questions.
I’d like to attend an online event, but I’m not available that day. Can I get a recording?
Yes, we record almost all our online talks so simply book as normal and you will receive the recording link via an email from TicketSource after the event. The recording is available for two weeks after the event. Please check your spam if you do not receive the email. Please note we cannot record our workshops/ reading groups as we do not have permissions from attendees. If we are not able to record a talk for any reason, we will state that on the event listing so please read all the information before booking. Any questions, please contact lynda@elizabethgaskellhouse.co.uk.
I live outside the UK. Can I still pay for and attend the online talks?
Yes, we have audience members who regularly join us from all over the world including Europe, Asia, North America, South America and Australia. Our online talks are all on zoom and our website accepts most credit card payments. Our event timings are based on the UK time zone including Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) and British Summer Time (BST). If the times aren’t suitable for you, then you can buy a ticket and receive the recording afterwards via an email from TicketSource. Please check your spam in case the email goes there.
I missed a previous event. Is it possible to get a recording?
Yes, we record almost all our online talks. Many of our talks are available from our online shop by clicking the link here. If you can not find the event you are looking for then please make a donation for the ticket price here and email lynda@elizabethgaskellhouse.co.uk for the recording. Our standard talks are normally £5, but some events may differ so please check if you are unsure. Please note we cannot record our workshops and reading groups as we do not have permissions from attendees.
What previous talks have you had and how do I access them?
We have a huge range of talks available for you to watch and many are now available from our online shop by clicking the link here. We also have other talks on North and South, Cranford, Mary Barton, Wives and Daughters, Victorian Christmas, Elizabeth’s friendship with Charlotte Brontë and the restoration of the Elizabeth Gaskell’s House and Garden. You can see a fuller list for each topic by clicking on the links here: North and South, Mary Barton, Charlotte Brontë, Christmas and House Restoration. If there are other topics you are interested in, please get in touch as we have a large back catalogue of recordings. Please make a donation for the ticket price (normally £5) here and then email lynda@elizabethgaskellhouse.co.uk for the recording.
I’ve booked my ticket, but how do I access the event?
You will receive an e-ticket with the zoom link and joining instructions. Simply click the link five minutes before the starting time and submit the passcode if required. Please check spam/junk folders, in case emails are diverted there. Ticket sales will cease 15 minutes before the event starts.
I’ve booked for an online talk but haven’t received my ticket or joining instructions?
Please check your spam/junk folders, in case emails are diverted there. If you still haven’t received it, then please email lynda@elizabethgaskellhouse.co.uk with the name of the event that you booked.
The talk I’d like to attend is now fully booked. Will you release more tickets?
We normally manage a waiting list if an event is fully booked, but we do also release more tickets if there is big demand for an event. If you would like to check ticket availability, please email lynda@elizabethgaskellhouse.co.uk with the name of the event you are interested in.
The talks are online via Zoom so why is there a limit on numbers?
Our zoom license is limited to 100 people so we have to put a cap on the number of tickets available to sell. If there is a lot of interest in an event then we can pay to increase the license but this is only viable when there is extra heavy demand for an event. You can still buy the recording though – just see the information above.
How do I find out about upcoming events?
The best way to find out about our events is to sign up to our newsletter. You can also follow us on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram for all the latest news and information.
