In this lively online event we take a closer look at two of literature’s best loved heroes – Mr Thornton from Elizabeth Gaskell’s North and South and Mr Darcy from Jane Austen’s Pride & Prejudice.
Sit back and enjoy a Valentine’s treat as we celebrate two delicious literary leading men. Discover how our heroes compare and contrast as they maintain their honour and overcome challenges to win the heart of their leading ladies, Margaret Hale and Lizzy Bennet. Join Libby Tempest, Chair of the Gaskell Society, and Natalie Jenner, best-selling author of The Jane Austen Society, to help us decide who should be crowned most romantic literary hero!

Libby Tempest has been Chair of the Gaskell Society since 2017. She previously ran the Art & Music Libraries in Manchester Central Library and the much-missed Language & Literature Library which contained one of the best Gaskell collections in the UK. She is a volunteer at Chetham’s Library, The Portico and Elizabeth Gaskell’s House.
Natalie Jenner is the internationally bestselling author of two novels, The Jane Austen Society and Bloomsbury Girls, which have been published in more than twenty languages. Her third novel, Every Time We Say Goodbye, is scheduled for release in 2024. www.nataliejenner.com
