Discover the restored home of Elizabeth Gaskell, one of the UK’s most important Victorian writers. Elizabeth Gaskell was a writer, social reformer and radical, whose work has been adapted for TV and film. She’s best known for her novels like North and South and Cranford, but most people don’t know she was also a pioneer of women’s rights and worked to improve the lives of working-class people in industrial Manchester.

Get hands-on with the books in the Study, see where Elizabeth used to write and follow our brand new women’s history digital trail and uncover the hidden histories of our collection.
