Throughout January, visitors to Manchester’s award-winning literary house, Elizabeth Gaskell’s House, can pick up a beautifully bound publication featuring poetry, short stories and a play by its writers in residence.
Three young writers – Georgia Affonso, Princess Arinola Adegbite, and Guruleen Kahlo – have created a lasting legacy in the home of one of Manchester’s most celebrated authors, Elizabeth Gaskell.
Inspired by the House and its rich history, their work has culminated in a newly published book, available for a suggested donation of £3. The publication offers visitors the chance to take home a unique piece of contemporary writing shaped by this historic setting.
Recently awarded a Hidden Gem accolade by VisitEngland, Elizabeth Gaskell’s House is the ideal literary haven to visit this January, where visitors can discover more about the trailblazing Manchester writer and her family.
Director of Elizabeth Gaskell’s House, Sally Jastrzebski-Lloyd, says, ‘We are starting 2026 by sharing how our young writers in residence found inspiration in the many stories waiting to be discovered in the House, and we are thrilled that this offers new ways for visitors to connect to the work and life of Elizabeth Gaskell.’
The accompanying exhibition, I’ve Never Read Elizabeth Gaskell, is currently on a tour of Greater Manchester Libraries starting with Didsbury Library until the end of January.
This project has been made possible thanks to the support of The National Lottery Heritage Fund and has been delivered in partnership with The Writing Squad and Manchester City of Literature.
