Easter Events

Join us for family fun at the House this Easter, with Easter egg trails, Easter crafts, visits from our Victorian servants, and more throughout the Easter holidays.

“There was Easter proper, which always required new clothing of some kind, for fear of certain consequences from little birds, who were supposed to resent the impiety of those who do not wear some new article of dress on Easter-day…So piety demanded a new bonnet, or a new gown”

Elizabeth Gaskell, from Wives and Daughters

Follow Elizabeth Gaskell’s Easter tradition in Wives and Daughters, and don’t forget to have ‘some new article of dress on Easter-day’. We’ll be making Easter crowns to wear, and decorating paper eggs for our Easter tree, as well as following a Victorian egg trail through the House in order to earn a chocolatey Easter treat. We’ll have an outdoor Easter scavenger hunt for intrepid nature sleuths who want to explore the garden and the great outdoors too.

From 11-3pm on Easter Sunday and on Wednesdays and Sundays throughout the Easter school holidays.

On 4 April meet two of the Gaskell’s family servants – faithful housekeeper Hearn, and new recruit Margaret, fresh from the Cumbrian countryside. Join the dutiful duo, as they bustle about the House gossiping about the Gaskells and putting visitors to work on some light servant duties! From 11-3pm.

Usual admission (£4/£5, under 16s free). £1 for Easter activities.
