The joy of volunteering…

Volunteering at Elizabeth Gaskell’s House comes with lots of benefits – and one of them is meeting such a lot of interesting and lovely people who share my interests!

There’s a production of Schiller’s Mary Stuart currently playing at the Lowry Theatre at Salford Quays – and what a treat of a performance it is. A group of volunteers with the volunteer co-ordinator are going along to see the show tonight – knowing they’ll have a fabulous evening with some great discussions about the play.

I can’t recommend volunteering at the House highly enough. Don’t take my word for it  – listen to our volunteers talking about what they love about their time in the House. And as you’ll see from the video, we have such a rich and diverse group of people coming together.

Check our website for more information about volunteering and if you’ve got any questions contact Esther, our Volunteer Co-ordinator on enquiries@elizabethgaskellhouse.co.uk

And because I was thinking about Mary, Queen of Scots as I was browsing the bookshelves of our selection of second hand books this morning, I was delighted to find these two books on our shelves.

We have a great collection of second hand books at the House and there’s always an eclectic selection for sale in the tea room and in the Servants Hall. You’ll find fiction, biography, books about history, art and gardening and much more.

And to browse a larger selection, we hold a regular second hand book sale every second Sunday of the month when there is an even larger choice of books for you to browse and buy. The next one will be held on Sunday May 13 from 11am to 3pm- do come along and pick up a bargain! Usual House admission charges are £5/£4 and your ticket lasts for the whole year.
