22. A Year in the Life of Elizabeth Gaskell’s House

9 – 16 March 2025

Pleased to report a much better week across the board. We started the week with good visitor numbers and spend at our March second-hand book sale – helped I’m sure by our buy one get one free on hardbacked books (which continues all month whilst we try to clear the stock). We also welcomed all our writers-in residents into the House which the volunteers loved.

The end of the week also saw an article from BBC Online go live about our Writers Residency. I couldn’t be happier! You can read it here. The headline, ‘I didn’t know Gaskell – now I write in her house’ said exactly what we wanted to achieve with this project!

There was lots going on outside the House this week for staff. On Monday Katy had organised a volunteer trip to Ordsall Hall in Salford which seemed to go down well. Katy and Lucy then attended the Northern Restaurants and Bar on Tuesday, on the look out for possible new food suppliers; and on Wednesday Katy was in Liverpool at a Cultural Enterprise Trade Show, this time on the look out for new retail suppliers. And if that wasn’t enough, on Thursday myself and Katy headed to the Guildhall in York for the Museum Development North Museum Celebration event. We heard from lots of the museums throughout the day and we even got an applause for achieving museum accreditation for the first time, which was very appreciated.

Other good news included finishing our content upload on the Bloomberg Connect App whilst is goes for review. We should (fingers crossed) be live on the app on 31 March. And we received our award from the wedding website Hitched – celebrating that we have 25, five Star reviews! Massive well done to all the staff and volunteers who work on the weddings.

Finally our new print (yes there is still want/need for printed leaflets ) were delivered from the printers this week as well and will be going out across Greater Manchester between April-August.
