Summer is back and we can’t wait to welcome you to Elizabeth Gaskell’s House. School holidays are here and the garden looks beautiful so bring family and friends to Manchester’s very own literary house.

Children in sunny garden

There is something for everyone and, with all activities included in admission, its great value too. The kids can make their own creative craft with a new themed craft every fortnight. We have mask-making, creating your own optical illusion game and puppets in our Servants’ Hall so there’s always something to get stuck into.*

For sunny days try your hand at kid-friendly games inspired by Bridgerton from traditional croquet to boules on the lawn. Why not bring a picnic and explore the garden with our QR code trail?

Back inside the House, there is dressing-up, colouring, hands-on activities and our popular Cranford the Cat trail. The trail is packed with activities, puzzles and jokes so the kids can get involved too.

Plus you can enjoy some delicious cakes and snacks in the Tea Room and Servants’ Hall and there are pocket-money gifts in the shop too.

The House and garden are fully-wheelchair/ pram/ pushchair accessible, there are baby change facilities and we are breastfeeding-friendly. Your ticket includes 12 month entry and kids go free with a paying adult so banish boredom and visit as many times as you like!

The craft activity is available 11am – 4pm (last entry 3pm) on open days between Wednesday 17 July – Sunday 1 September* and included in admission. Adults are £7.50 per person and under 16s are free with a paying adult. Booking is advised as it helps us make sure you have the best time possible – although you can just turn up and pay on the door.

We are approximately a 10-15 minute walk from Manchester Museum and the Whitworth Art Gallery on Oxford Road.

The House is open every Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday 11am-4.30pm (last entry 3pm). *Craft is unavailable on Sunday 11 August due to our popular second-hand book sale.

I'm afraid we must do some shopping
