The Portico Sadie Massey Awards are accepting entries for this year’s Reading and Writing Competitions, open to ages seven to sixteen. The writing competition asks What’s Your Story? In keeping with this theme, the website highlights four people who lived in the North, achieved great things and had interesting lives, and then asks, ‘What’s your story?’ One of the people selected is Elizabeth Gaskell. Entrants are asked to write a narrative based on a person, real or imagined, living in the North of England. Creativity and originality are encouraged.
The Reading Competition wants to know about any book, fact, fiction or poetry, of your choice and why we should read it too.
The closing date for both competitions is Midnight, Friday, 26 March 2021
Prizes! Everyone who enters will receive a Portico gift pack of a notebook, pencil and bookmark. All schools that enter will receive a copy of 100 Great Black Britons. All winners will receive writing mentorships, books and gift packs, while Key Stage 4 winners will also receive further mentoring, workshops and 1-2-1s with Manchester’s The Writing Squad.
This year’s reading judges are Ayesha Ansari-Choudhury (founder of Indie-Bookseller, Mirror Me Write) and Mo Ray (Theatre reviewer and editor) while the writing judges are Anna Mainwaring (Author of Tulip Taylor and Rebel with a Cupcake) and Okechukwu Nzelu (Author of The Private Joys of Nnenna Maloney). They are very much looking forward to reading the book reviews and short stories!
