‘A young lady… looked keenly to the prospect of some wedding-cake’

Elizabeth Gaskell, Wives and Daughters

This week, I’m re-visiting some of the culinary delights from our 2024 weddings!

Food glorious food!

Food is a highlight of every wedding day for the staff and volunteer team. We have worked with a variety of caterers over the last year and our couples have chosen some delicious food.

The standout of 2024 was Sian & Jozef’s hog roast supplied by The Striped Pig. The team set up in our courtyard and guests enjoyed a full hog roast (plus a veggie option) including all of the trimmings such as stuffing and apple sauce. The ‘veggie hog’ and sticky toffee pudding were also very popular!

We cannot talk about weddings and food at Elizabeth Gaskell’s House without mentioning Sharon at Vintage Afternoon Teas. Sharon has catered for so many weddings here at the House that she really does feel like a member of the team. She produced seven delicious afternoon teas for our couples this year as well as a few wedding cakes (more on cake below)!

Big shout out to her Bakewell tarts, chocolate eclairs, Victoria sponges and, most importantly, her legendary egg mayo sandwiches. My mouth is watering just writing this!

Cake!

Don’t worry, we’re not done with food just yet! What is a wedding without cake? It’s such an important part of the day and we have certainly had some amazing ones this year.

We were in awe of the stunningly insta-worthy cake from the Palms Bakery at Laura & Liam’s wedding in April. They went for a gorgeous (and delicious) all white, heart shaped cake with a simple L + L decoration.

Another cake highlight was the stunning blackberry and lavender cake that Sharon (Vintage Afternoon Teas) made for Kim & Richard’s wedding in May. Lavender is Kim’s favourite flower and featured heavily in their stunning florals by local florist Liv at Sweet Bud. Sharon was tasked with incorporating this tricky flavour into the cake and did an incredible job, even hunting down some edible lavender to decorate with. The cake was so delicious that I didn’t even manage to get a photo of it before it was eaten!

Whilst we had some lovely traditional wedding cakes this year, 2024 felt like the year of the cupcake at Eliabeth Gaskell’s House. Jaqueline & Emyr had a stunning cupcake tower provided by Hey Little Cupcake. The bride was gluten free so all the food at their wedding was too so that she could enjoy it. Similarly, Kelsey & Dan opted for lemon drizzle and cherry Bakewell vegan cupcakes in by Cabbage Patch Bakery. These were probably my favourite cakes of the year!
