This is the final instalment in my series of wedding blogs, thank you if you’ve taken the time to read them all! This week is all about cats, the secret to the perfect wedding at Elizabeth Gaskell’s House!
Meow you’re talking!
This may not seem like an obvious category for a wedding blog, but trust me, it’s necessary.
There is an obsession with cats at the House. Our staff, volunteers and visitors all have a love of cats. Any cat-related post always outperforms anything else on social media (even Thornton Thursday) and we have an array of cat products available in our shop. Our Cranford the cat trail is extremely popular with families and is often a hit at the weddings too! You can read more about Elizabeth Gaskell’s love of cats here.
It is unsurprising that cat-lovers are inexplicably drawn to the House for their nuptials. Many have asked if they can bring pets (usually cats) to the wedding. Unfortunately, we don’t allow animals, but our couples usually find a way to involve them anyway. This year, we have had two (yes, two) couples bring framed pictures of their cats to display proudly in the Servants’ Hall. However, it was Jaqueline and Emyr’s cat that stole the show. Their wedding cake was topped by a mini replica of their pet!

Thank you
It has been an incredible year with some truly amazing weddings. We get so invested in each and every one of them and it is such a joy to celebrate love as part of our job!
The weddings would not be possible without the rest of the team. Thank you to Ellie who joined in March 2024 and has been invaluable in helping me with all aspects of the weddings.
Both of us would like to shoutout our incredible wedding volunteers. 18 different volunteers helped at weddings this year, covering a total of 63 shifts. This included 8 new recruits in 2024!
Thank you to Jane, Janice, Laura, Liz, Chris, Kaia, Louanne, Anne, Lizzie, Diana, Tracy, Valerie, Elaine, Alan, Gemma, Leo, Rosie and Carina!
The income raised from weddings at the House helps to keep us open to the public and the help of our award-winning volunteers is crucial in making this happen
