Over the coming weeks we will be introducing everyone from our small staff team at Elizabeth Gaskell’s House, and getting them to answer some questions about working at the House.

Lucy Green is our Wedding and Hires Manager. Lucy joined the staff team in July 2023, but prior to that she had been a volunteer for several years whilst she completed her Masters in Art Gallery and Museum Studies at the University of Manchester.

Lucy grew up very close to Knutsford, Elizabeth Gaskell’s childhood home.

What do you do?

I manage all of the weddings at the house as well as any meeting room bookings. After so many weddings, I’m a pro at pouring prosecco and throwing confetti!

What’s your favourite place in Elizabeth Gaskell’s House?

William Gaskell’s study. I’m a serious bookworm and it’s just such a cosy room, I wish I had one similar in my house!

What’s the best thing about working at Elizabeth Gaskell’s House?

I love having a job where I get to celebrate love on a daily basis! It’s so rewarding to get to know our couples and be a part of their wedding day.

What’s the worst thing about working at Elizabeth Gaskell’s House?

The worst thing about working at Elizabeth Gaskell’s House is the cold! The house is FREEZING in the winter and you’ll usually find me in at least 2 jumpers!

Aside from Elizabeth Gaskell, who is your favourite author, book or genre ?

It’s so difficult to choose a favourite book but it’d have to be a toss-up between Arundhati Roy’s The God of Small Things and R. F. Kuang’s Babel.
