Online Talk: North and South – Fashion in the TV Classic

Join Gabby Monet as she takes you on a fabulous fashion journey. You can find out more about the tv adaptation of Elizabeth Gaskell’s classic North and South. Take a peek at what characters like Margaret Hale would have worn in the 1850s, from large skirts to beautiful bonnets in an age of clothing colour and luxury.

Find out about the popular female silhouette, the latest hairstyles and the stunning new colour dyes that transformed fashion.

The talk will include a discussion about the costumes worn in the 2004 BBC adaptation of North and South and other notable on-screen dramas.

Speaker Gabby Monet is a historical costume designer specializing in historical dress, with a particular passion for the elegance of the Georgian period and the intricate detail of Victorian fashion.

Gabby’s work has been featured at Bankfield Museum, National Emergency services museum, the London college of fashion and various TV programmes, where her eye for details has been praised as essential to the atmosphere of the piece.
