Autumn is just around the corner. So, are you ready for a new chapter of online Autumn Events 2025?
You can choose between literary workshops featuring favourite writers like Jane Austen (and, of course, Elizabeth Gaskell) or a packed programme of fascinating online talks. We’ve got North and South fashion, the Lady of the Lamp Florence Nightingale, Victorian Ghost Stories and much much more. You can browse the full listing of Autumn Events 2025 at this link here. What will you choose?

This September our online events season brings a new course about Feisty Females, starting with one of your favourite heroines, Lizzy Bennet from Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. And followed by Charlotte Bronte’s Shirley, Margaret Hale from North and South and George Moore’s Esther Waters.
All four heroines stick to their principles and get what they want. But which one impresses you most? Do any of them sell out? And what are their authors saying about the choices that women have in their respective periods? Join the conversation at this link here.
Online Talks
Elizabeth Gaskell was a modern woman in many ways. She managed a hugely successful writing career, welcomed numerous high profile guests, was a hands-on mother to four girls and supported her husband’s work. So how did she do it? Take a look behind closed doors at the family and personal life of one of our greatest novelists on 18 September. For further info, click this link here .
At the end of the month we welcome back curator Elinor Camille-Wood as she takes you on a fabulous fashion journey through North and South. Find out what characters like Margaret Hale would have worn in the 1850s, from large skirts to beautiful bonnets in an age of costume colour and luxury. Book now at this link here.

And if all that isn’t enough, in October you can change hearts and minds with Reforming Novels, investigate disease and dying in Victorian literature with ‘A Flattering Malady’ and scare yourself silly with Victorian Ghost Stories for Halloween. We’re also hosting online reading groups and our legendary in-person monthly second-hand book sale. To see the full autumn calendar, click this link here.
So, why not give yourself something to look forward to as the nights draw in? We’ll be waiting for you online with our friendly, passionate literary experts this autumn. See you there!
